The Utility Board of Tuskegee (UBT) was thrilled to support the opening of the new Pilot gas station at Exit 38, a significant milestone in the ongoing economic development of our community. This state-of-the-art convenience store is more than just a stop for travelers – it’s a tribute to Tuskegee’s rich history and a commitment to the future growth of Macon County.
The new Pilot location honors the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen with a design that includes a replica of the original Moton Field Control Tower, in-store signage commemorating their 1,578 missions and 850 awards, and a stunning replica P-51 Mustang “Red Tail” ceiling feature. These thoughtful tributes serve as a reminder of the Airmen’s courage and achievements, while also connecting history, education, and community impact.
This development was made possible through a collaborative effort between Pilot, the Macon County Economic Development Authority, and Tuskegee University. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 16, community leaders, including Mayor Tony Haygood and State Senator Billy Beasley, celebrated the store’s opening. Pilot also demonstrated its dedication to the community with a generous $20,000 donation to the Macon County Board of Education to support local students.
Irving McConnell, a local developer and supporter of the project, remarked, “This is very special to bring Pilot to this community because of the opportunities it will bring for jobs and the tax money that will help the schools. Just the commitment of building something in Tuskegee is the start of bringing economic development to the whole county.”
UBT is proud to support and celebrate this partnership and the positive impact it brings to our region. We remain committed to fostering economic growth and community development, with expectations of more exciting projects to come to Exit 38 and beyond.
Together, we are building a brighter future for Tuskegee. Stay tuned for updates on further developments as we continue to work towards a prosperous community for all.
